Director, National Guard Bureau Joint Staff Major General Patrick A. Murphy

Major General Patrick A. Murphy is Director, National Guard Bureau Joint Staff at the Pentagon, Washington, DC.  He serves as the principal staff officer to the Chief, National Guard Bureau in his oversight role of over 450,000 National Guard soldiers and airmen in the United States.   Major General Murphy’s duties include supervising the work of National Guard Bureau Joint Staff  with a focus on Homeland Defense and Defense Support to Civil Authorities.

Originally trained as a helicopter pilot, Major General Murphy has commanded at the company and battalion levels and has served in brigade senior staff positions.  He also previously served as The Adjutant General of the National Guard State New York commanding a force of over 10,000 citizen soldiers and airmen.  In addition, he served as Deputy Chief of Staff for National Guard Affairs with U.S. Army Third Division in Kuwait and as Chief of Staff of U.S. Northern Command.   Major General Murphy is a graduate of the U.S. Army War College.
